16th St. Celebration of Black History Month

16th St. Celebration of Black History Month

As a part of the study of the history, culture and contributions of African Americans in the US, the PreK3, PreK4, and Kindergarten students constructed a quilt to memorialize the many purposes of the quilt along the “Freedom Road”.

After listening to the story, Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt”, the students engaged in fun hands on activities, including making patterns, cutting, pasting, coloring and making a school quilt!

Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt As a seamstress in the Big House, Clara dreams of a reunion with her Momma, who lives on another plantation--and even of running away to freedom. Then she overhears two slaves talking about the Underground Railroad. In a flash of inspiration, Clara sees how she can use the cloth in her scrap bag to make a map of the land--a freedom quilt--that no master will ever suspect.
